Dream Symbols 8: The House Part 3: The Bathroom

Bathrooms can be very interesting symbols in dreams. What do we do there? We eliminate, we cleanse ourselves, and we purify. Hence, major dream interpretations of the dreamer’s presence in the bathroom deal with both of those processes.

What might dream elimination symbolize in real life? A relationship. A way of being. A pattern of behavior. A way of speaking. A way of not speaking. Excess weight. An illness. A way of thinking. A bad job. As you can see, the possibilities are endless.

And what might we be cleansing ourselves of and hence purifying? Again, a relationship, the way we are, the way we behave, the way we speak, our bodies, the way we think, our work, etc.

A bathroom may be dirty or pure, it may be messy or orderly, all of which again symbolizes something about the way the dreamer is going through the process that the bathroom itself symbolizes.

Are you having trouble getting the toilet to flush? So you’ve eliminated but have not been able to get rid of the toxic waste yet. How does that symbolize what is going on in your life? What might you need to do in order to be able to “flush the toilet”?

You might even find dream feces on the floor of your dream bathroom, that disgust you. What is it that disgusts you in your real life that is not being disposed of properly?

Maybe the water from the bathtub, sink, or shower isn’t running well, or is too hot, or comes out brown and rusty. So the question is: how are you experiencing this problem of your own purification in your waking life?

You might also look at whether you are comfortable or not in your dream bathroom, any feelings you may have of fear or relief, as these – as always - will impinge on the way you might interpret the rest of the dream.
