Recognizing Wealth

Most people have heard the story of the man who left his rather humble home in the village to go out into the world to seek riches. In some versions of the story he does, indeed, find riches, and in other versions he does not. But in all versions, when he finally returns home, he digs up the garden to plant corn, or he goes into the cellar to look for something that was left there, or he does something totally different but that leads him to the same situation as the garden or cellar version: he finds great riches, that have been there all along in his own small and very humble home. Enormous wealth was there all along. He had simply never recognized it. He had not even been able to imagine it. And yet, all he had to do was look there as opposed to outside in the world.

Similarly, many people have a dream where they find themselves inside, or in front of, a very humble dwelling, and they recognize it as their home. The initial room they come into (or find themselves in) is similarly humble, bare walls and floors, nothing really to make it special. And yet, as they begin to climb stairs (despite the fact that the house - from the outside - may have appeared to have only one floor), they find themselves coming into greater and greater rooms, embellished richly with ornaments, rugs, vases, and paintings. One after another of these rooms comes into sight, and of course, the symbolic meaning of this is - in a dream - that the richness of the inner life of the dreamer has yet to be discovered, but that he/she is close because otherwise the dream would not be pointing him in that direction.

In some fashion we can all apply this to our own lives. We may or may not have found success and riches in the outer world, but when we begin to scratch at the surface of our own being, of our own self, and when we begin to connect with our own soul, we begin to fathom the magnitude of riches inherent in the self - riches that are not immediately visible to the naked eye, but they are rapidly visible to the inner eye and inner knowing. In the connection to the self you see the treasure, and you recognize that the treasure you have sought out there lies in you because it is you - the eternal you.
