Remember To Be Kind

Such a simple thing to be kind, so why aren't we always kind? Think of the number of times you've found it necessary to impress upon someone that you are right, or know better (or are better), as opposed to being kind. Ugh. Makes you shudder with yourself, right? It certainly makes me shudder with myself.

I hold these two quotes close in order to remind myself frequently:

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.
Dalai Lama

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.
Seneca

Let us all make a practice of always being kind. And let's start right now!

From the Description on Amazon:

Ask anyone, whatever their circumstances, if their life is vibrant, fulfilling, harmonious and happy. An honest reply is likely to be 'no', because to answer a truthful 'yes' is no mean feat. Only to grow psychologically and emotionally is not enough. And only to grow spiritually is not enough either. All three dimensions need to be developed in order to realize your full potential. If you are willing to assume total responsibility for the self and to start what is an on-going journey, you will quickly begin to glimpse the first fruits of the ultimate goal: inner well-being, freedom, peace, harmony and joy. This book sets out the pathway to self-mastery and self-discovery and walking that pathway will be the most exciting adventure of your life.

My new book The Tao of Spiritual Partnership is now also available in print and Kindle formats.

From the Description on Amazon: More exciting than any other kind of relationship you have ever known, spiritual partnership is a path, a Tao, available to you so that you may transform your life. Spiritual partnership becomes background music to daily life allowing you to enhance the process of your growth and evolution.

This ground-breaking book addresses:

• relationship patterns that hold you back from a truly fulfilled life
• the strong connection between sexuality and spiritual partnership
• communication leading to true connection & lasting transformation of your relationship

It is precisely at the problematic crossroads so often encountered in relationships that we are offered the opportunity to create a new foundation based on mutual complementarity rather than need; a free relationship between two people who want to be together, rather than two people who need to be together. Needing another, we are told, is the measure of love, but for a fully conscious individual nothing could be further from the truth. And therein lies part of the secret and healing power of spiritual partnerships.

Praise for The Tao of Spiritual Partnership

“All humans seek the illusive touch of another's Soul, which opens us to the sense of belonging to something bigger than the self. Dr. Kortsch has given us the true "tao" of relationship in this brilliant exploration of emotional tapestry. We will be grateful for this illumination of spiritual partnership for generations to come."
Chris Griscom: Spiritual Leader, Author

“Eloquently and comprehensive, showing how your primary love relationship may be a sacred vessel that transports you and your partner to a place of mutual healing and expansion.”
Robert Schwartz: Author of Your Soul’s Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born

"The Tao of Spiritual Partnership is a unique blend of wit and wisdom; Dr. Kortsch encourages us to take responsibility for our relationships, while recognizing and seizing the opportunities for our own personal spiritual growth."

Standing Out From the Crowd

Don't you like to think you're special? I do. Don't you like to think you are not just another person, but that you have something different to offer? I certainly do. But what we would like to think about ourselves and what is our reality are often two entirely different issues.

Yet there is something you can do which will eventually make you stand out so much that others may wish to follow your steps. It's quite simple (but not what most automatically do). It's almost a secret, simply because few bother to find out about it because of the fact that our culture puts so much greater emphasis on another kind of behavior that guarantees outer success. Doing "it" doesn't give immediate tangible benefits but over the long term, gives what are probably the greatest benefits any individual may wish for: inner peace, freedom, harmony, and joy.

What is it? Simply this: spend a bit of time every day becoming more aware than the day before. As you do so, spend a bit of time every day making choices that come from this place of awareness. And as you do that, recognize that your awareness and your conscious choices are creating a pattern of self-responsibility that takes in all you feel, think, say, and do, and how you react at any given moment under any given circumstance. This further leads to self-love and self-love, which we can define as making of your inner well-being a priority, means that you will be of so much greater benefit to all those whose lives touch yours. And of course, as you practice all of this, you will reach a place of inner freedom, peace, harmony, and joy. And that, my friend, is how you can stand out from the crowd!

Your Belief in Others Can Be Their Success

Victor Frankl was a psychiatrist, Holocaust survivor, and author of Man's Search For Meaning, a magnificent book that I have often recommended over the years, and which serves to remind us - just as in the case of Nelson Mandela - that we always have a choice, in particular about the manner in which we react to potentially dreadful events that occur in our lives.

In this brief (1972) clip on TED Frankl extols the virtues of believing in others ... of overestimating others in order to promote them to what they really can be!

And as a brief aside: those clients who come to see me whose parents helped them believe in themselves by continually showing them; demonstrating to them how much they (the parents) believe in them, are almost always clients whose issues are minor compared to those whose parents did not estimate them in this way.

Stop Believing in Your Limitations

How can I stop believing in my limitations is what is most likely going through your head, maybe even in derision at the author's naiveté at believing such a thing is even possible...

Let me put it to you like this: how much of your psychic energy does it take to continue to believe in your limitations? (I'm using the word 'psychic' in the sense of inner energy, as opposed to physical energy). Could you agree with me that it might take an equal amount of energy to sustain another kind of belief? One that holds that your limitation is not a limitation?

If you believe you can't run a marathon (assuming you have use of your legs), you can't, right? But what might happen if you began to believe you could?

If you believe you can't return to university at 43, you can't, right? But what might happen if you began to believe you could?

If you believe you can't learn a new language or how to play an instrument you can't, can you? But what might happen if you began to believe you could?

I imagine you get my drift. When you believe something about yourself it may be due to any number of reasons, some of which are:
  • upbringing and your parents' beliefs
  • having tried something once, not having succeeded, and then having decided that you will never be able to do it
  • things society says about people like you (whatever that means)
  • never having challenged the belief
  • knowing - somewhere deep inside of you - that as long as you believe in your limitation, you don't have to risk trying something you haven't tried before
So what would happen if you decided to believe in different things than the ones (or at least some of the ones) you have believed in up to now? In other words, invest the energy you currently invest in believing in your limitations in believing that you can overcome your limitations.

Reinforcing one type of belief is just as difficult in one direction as in the other one. Or just as easy.

Plant Your Own Garden

Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers, why not plant your own garden?

These thought-provoking and inspiring words, from an anonymous source, made me lean back in my early morning hunched-over-the-laptop-position with that amazing café con leche at my side to ask myself how much planting we really do. Our own gardens --- metaphor for ourselves is my take of this --- means turning the soil, placing the seeds or plantlings into it, covering them (or their roots) carefully, watering, fertilizing, weeding and ensuring they get enough light, but not too much.

When we want approbation, when we want admiration, when we want kudos from others, when we want to hear words of love, compassion, forgiveness or gratitude, when we want tenderness, consideration and kindness, we might take a lesson from our anonymous source and plant our own garden by offering all that we wish for from out there to others.

How often do you utter words of love? Of admiration? Of kindness? By planting them out there, seeds will fall, and soon you will have your own garden of breath-taking blossoms.

Being Unconquerable

Over the millennia of recorded human history we have countless examples of beings who may have been ill, suffering, in chains, or suppressed in some other way, and yet their spirit was never conquered because they had made some inner choices

Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition politician who remained under house arrest in Burma for a period of 15 years, even when her husband was dying in England is an excellent example of being unconquerable. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the midst of this in 1991. Nelson Mandela (my perennial favorite, as I always feel so inspired by him), is another unconquerable hero due to his 27 years as a prisoner of the Apartheid régime in South Africa, where he did not allow this harrowing situation to gain power over his inner self. As we all know, when he was finally released, he served as South Africa's first black elected president from 1994-1999. We can also go back in history to heroes such as Joan of Arc in France, Spartacus in Rome, or Winston Churchill in England.

What unites all the people I've mentioned is the indomitable aspect of their spirit; their refusal to allow their inner selves to be conquered by very difficult circumstances. Part of this may be due to the fact that they strongly believed in some goal or ideal, and part of it may be due to the fact that they took extremely good care of their thoughts.

Taking good care of your thoughts implies being conscious and aware (and loving yourself enough to want to do so and therefore to practice being so, while this is not yet a habit in your life). Imagine you are not aware of your body needing a shower, or your teeth needing a good brushing. You simply wouldn't do it if you were not aware of it. This, unfortunately, is what happens to so many who are not aware of their thoughts. They therefore allow these thoughts to run away with them, i.e., they allow their thoughts to dominate their mind, their emotions, and ultimately, their lives, resulting in a situation where they are not able to be unconquerable in the way I have described the mind of the above heroes.

Learning to take good care of your thoughts is a question of awareness, as said, and practicing being aware, until it becomes second nature. That's it. Seneca said: It is the power of the mind to be unconquerable.

The Gift of Anger

How can anger possibly be a gift? What happens when you play golf and mess up your shot because your posture for the swing was all wrong? What happens when you drive a car and miscalculate the distance of the lamppost behind you and hit it, scratching the back of your fender? What happens when you add too much salt to the stew you are cooking? Isn't it true that all of these occasions are - in a sense - gifts because they allow you to learn what not to do?

Anger is like that. Yes, even when the other person did something they should not have done and made you angry. Or it also applies when you arrive late for an important appointment, and you get angry at yourself. Anger is always an indication of something that you could do differently. If someone else has 'provoked' the anger, you can begin to learn how to bring yourself to a place of inner balance before you react. If you are angry at yourself for something you could have prevented, and that will now carry with it some consequences you would have preferred to avoid, you can learn from your mistake and decide you will not do that again.

Anger is a gift. And the more you see it as such, the less it will appear in your life. Your choice.

Putting An End to the Suffering

So many people are suffering about something that occurred weeks, months, years, and even decades ago. Each time they think about whatever happened; each time they remember the events, they go through the same hurt as they did during the originating moment, if not more. Each time they focus on it, the pain is drilled even more deeply into their psyche and simultaneously, each time their attention is given to that moment - once again - the entire dynamic around it becomes stronger and stronger, and hence much harder to release.

People often say that they are unable to let go of pain because it was - precisely - so painful. We get that. We understand. And yet we all know other people who have also gone though great pain and yet were somehow able to let go of it. What is the difference between the two sets of people? Why can the first set not let go of the pain, but the second set can?

Many authors have written about this. Chris Griscom refers to it as the emotional body and writes that it 'sticks' to us until we make changes in our recognition and understanding of how it got there in the first place. Eckhart Tolle calls it the pain body and states that although it hurts, we cling to it (even wallow in it) because it has become so familiar to us. Caroline Myss talks about woundology and that often people refuse to let go of their wounds because they (the wounds and the whole dynamic around them: the conversations, etc.) have become their identity. Who would they be without them?

But all these explanations carry one essential element in them, and that is the manner in which change is produced. It is a choice we can consciously make. Oh, not all at once; not all in one day, but gently, bit by bit, with awareness and intention. Did the thought about 'my pain' just pop back into my head? Am I beginning to feel the familiar surge of pain? This is where you make the choice. Not that you will no longer feel the pain; not that you will no longer think these thoughts (going about it that way would not solve anything), but that you will choose - just now - to focus elsewhere. Just for this moment. Perhaps you'll choose to focus on beauty, on gratitude, perhaps you'll choose to practice (briefly) mindfulness (see previous articles about all these topics), but if you will make that conscious choice now, today, at the moment that the pain beckoned you once again, you will begin the process of eroding its strength in you. So simple.

Because after that, all you do, is repeat this process over and over and over until you begin to notice that the pain or the thoughts about the pain arise much less frequently. This is how you can put an end to your suffering ... simply by choosing to do so.

Patience: A Tool in the Midst of Anger

If you are hanging pictures in your study, you will need to know how to measure a straight line, perhaps how to calculate symmetrical distances from one object to another in order to situate the picture at dead center, and you'll have to know how to use a hammer. If you are painting your bedroom wall, you will need to know how to edge the corners, prep the walls, and you'll also - obviously - need to know how to handle a roller brush and the smaller one for more delicate areas. And if you're mowing the grass, you'll need to know how to use the particular lawn mower you happen to have.

Logical. But each example refers to tools that you need to know how to handle in order to get the job done. Handling anger also requires tools. One of them can be patience. Patience in the face of what just happened or was just said, and patience in the face of your knee-jerk reactions to that. If I suggest that you make use of patience for your angry outbursts and patience is not a tool you are accustomed to using, then it makes just as little sense for you to try to do it, as it does for me to try to fix the broken plumbing in my bathroom. I simply have no experience in such issues, and no idea how to use the appropriate tools.

However, if you practice patience in other areas of your life that might just be a bit easier than in moments of anger, such as:
  • being patient while waiting behind a very slow person in the bank, or at the supermarket check-out line
  • being patient while being stalled in heavy rush-hour traffic
  • being patient with a small child that is learning how to walk (that one's easy ... think about it! And apply those principles.)
  • being patient with someone to whom you are teaching a skill that they are unfamiliar with: trigonometry, carpentry, graphic design, poetry. etc.
Clearly by developing the ability to be patient in areas of your life that do not provoke a knee-jerk reaction on your part, but rather, perhaps, merely impatience, will help you develop the muscle of patience for when you really need it, as in moments of anger. You'll never know how well it works unless you try.
