As you wake up you remember how much you enjoyed waking up with your former partner who left you. As you drive to work, you remember how difficult these last years have been for you. As you sit in your office with your first client, she reminds you of your mother with whom you had such a challenging relationship because she never really showed you she loved you.
It's now only 10:30 am and you've been up since 7, and almost all of that time has been spent in the past. So when does your life actually take place?
Your life really only happens when you are present - not when you are in the past in your mind, or even in the future. This requires being aware and it requires being aware of our thoughts and feelings. Once we realize that they have once again moved into the past, robbing us of our present, we either need to learn how to remain in the present (see other posts on mindfulness or thoughts), or we may need to briefly seek some counseling. But whatever we do, it is paramount to understand that our lives run away from us like grains of sand fall from our fingers at the beach, if we don't stop living in the past.
