What Do You Long For?

Has your life been reasonably successful thus far? Are you basically on track to the goals you want to reach financially and professionally? Do you sit back in your evenings or weekends and look with satisfaction at what your success has allowed you to acquire, and the kind of people you are able to surround yourself with? I believe most would call your story a successful one.

But tell me: what are your dreams really about? In those few moments of inattention at a board meeting, are you thinking about sitting on a bike driving into the endless sunset? Or dreaming about opening a restaurant instead of being CFO of a large corporation? Do you long for solitude instead of that stream of steady social chatter, or do you yearn to see the brilliance of fresh hope in the eyes of a child whom you have helped - in whatever capacity - to live a better life?

Gibran said that the significance of a man is not in what he attains but in what he longs to attain. I would add to that the simple idea that we need to become aware of these deep longings in ourselves and then do something about them. I'm not advocating resigning your job and trekking out to South Africa to work on a game reserve, but I am encouraging you to give more inner space and time to those yearnings, and to figure out what you can do about them. You owe this to yourself - and ultimately, you owe it to the world. What might change - no matter how small - if you followed this yearning of yours?

For much more about inner longings and your inner voice, about making choices that move you forward in your chosen direction and having meaning and purpose in your life, that enhances your inner well-being, have a look at my book Rewiring the Soul: Finding the Possible Self, available at Amazon as a paperback or e-book for Kindle and all Kindle applications.
