Fulfilling Spirit & Soul

When you watch the news, or read the latest sports scores, or when you read a novel, or watch a sitcom or when you hear - again - about the global banking crisis, or when you watch another reality show on TV, or when you read your text messages or emails on your smart phone - how truly fulfilled are you feeling?

You might say that what I am asking has to do with how quickly you need to find another show, book, political crisis, novel, or movie to put your attention on. How quickly you need to re-plenish that part of you that needs this kind of nourishment.

It's a bit like with fast food. The feeling of being full generally doesn't last very long and we soon want some more food, even though we may have consumed vast amounts of calories. But we long for more. Not because we're food addicts first and foremost, but because what we ate consisted of empty calories that added little or no real nutrition to our physical body and its needs. Its very essence causes us to seek more.

It's the same thing with our mind, heart, and spirit. Feed it mainly empty calories, and it will very quickly crave more. But feed it something of substance and you can live off of that for a long time. It nourishes and fulfills you in ways the empty calories can never hope to do. Does this mean you should never have any of those empty calories? Of course not! But just as you probably watch how much junk food you eat, you also might like to be vigilant about how much other junk - that simply is unable to feed your mind, heart and spirit - you take in.
