The Purpose of Life is to be Happy

I've been collecting quotes for as long as I can remember. I used to write them in a notebook when I was a young girl, then I progressed to a typewriter, and typed them all up and put them in a three-ring binder. Finally, when I started using a computer in 1990 (long before Windows ... that was still in DOS), I began to store them on my hard drive.

And so today, as I wanted to get to some of my quotes on happiness, since I have them stored by author as opposed to by subject, I went online to several sites to pick out those that have most meant to me over the years. And here they are - perhaps they will form the basis of your own first collection.

If you click on the label associated with this post (below the post): joy and happiness, you will be linked to many other posts I've written over the years about this subject. On my website are many articles about it as well.

Quotes can be of great solace in trying times, but you have to be able to access them. Quotes about happiness are priceless ... enjoy!

The purpose of our lives is to be happy. Dalai Lama

For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness. Ralph Waldo Emerson

People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be. Abraham Lincoln

Of all forms of caution, caution in love is perhaps the most fatal to true happiness. Bertrand Russell, The Conquest of Happiness

Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. Marcel Proust

Happiness depends upon ourselves. Aristotle

Happiness comes when you believe in what you are doing, know what you are doing, and love what you are doing. Brian Tracy

Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder ... Henry David Thoreau

"What will they think of me?" must be put aside for bliss. Joseph Campbell

It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere. Agnes Repplier

Gratitude is one of the sweet shortcuts to finding peace of mind and happiness inside. No matter what is going on outside of us, there's always something we could be grateful for. Barry Neil Kaufman Happiness is a Choice

Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give. Eleanor Roosevelt

The greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the development of love and compassion. The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lamai

Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it. Groucho Marx

If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes. Andrew Carnegie

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. Buddha

Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself. Ralph Waldo Emerson

For much more about hapiness in your life, about your choices regarding how to achieve it on a daily basis, and about the self-transformational process - both in your outer life in the world, and in your inner life with your connection to your inner, divine self, have a look at my book Rewiring the Soul: Finding the Possible Self

From the Description of Rewiring the Soul on Amazon:

Ask anyone, whatever their circumstances, if their life is vibrant, fulfilling, harmonious and happy. An honest reply is likely to be 'no', because to answer a truthful 'yes' is no mean feat. Only to grow psychologically and emotionally is not enough. And only to grow spiritually is not enough either. All three dimensions need to be developed in order to realize your full potential. If you are willing to assume total responsibility for the self and to start what is an on-going journey, you will quickly begin to glimpse the first fruits of the ultimate goal: inner well-being, freedom, peace, harmony and joy. This book sets out the pathway to self-mastery and self-discovery and walking that pathway will be the most exciting adventure of your life.
