Your Friend & Your Enemy

It's easy to distinguish between your friend and your enemy when they are out there - visible to the naked eye, not only for how you recognize their faces, but also due to how you recognize what they do to and for you, proving by those words or acts the fact that they are your friends or enemies.

It's slightly  more complicated to recognize when we're talking about the friend and the enemy we all have inside of us. You know - the voice that tells us we can't, or that we're not good enough, or that we'll never make it, or that we're a failure. That voice - the voice of our inner enemy - is insidious and potentially so sabotaging that it might prove itself right if we commit the mistake of believing it. Furthermore, that voice is often heard within the secure confines of our comfort zone and hence it keeps us there, and by so doing, it keeps us from growing.

But we also have another 'person' inside of us, and that is our friend. That's the one - although its voice is often much, much weaker than the voice of our enemy - that says yes you can or it may say of course this is possible, just give it a try or it may say remember when you did such-and-such and you believed you wouldn't be able to manage it and you did ... just do that again and so on. This is the voice we need to listen to and this is the inner person that needs to receive precedence in what we believe and what we don't.

Become acquainted with those inner people of yours and make sure that you can easily distinguish between your friend and your enemy and make even more sure that you make the conscious choice of showing one the door and giving the other your hand. There is a wonderful Costa Rican proverb that goes: All people have their friend and their enemy within themselves.

For more about being aware of your inner friend and enemy, and of making conscious choices that will enhance your life and promote greater inner peace and freedom, have a look at my book Rewiring the Soul: Finding the Possible Self (paperback or Kindle).

From the Description on Amazon:

Ask anyone, whatever their circumstances, if their life is vibrant, fulfilling, harmonious and happy. An honest reply is likely to be 'no', because to answer a truthful 'yes' is no mean feat. Only to grow psychologically and emotionally is not enough. And only to grow spiritually is not enough either. All three dimensions need to be developed in order to realize your full potential. If you are willing to assume total responsibility for the self and to start what is an on-going journey, you will quickly begin to glimpse the first fruits of the ultimate goal: inner well-being, freedom, peace, harmony and joy. This book sets out the pathway to self-mastery and self-discovery and walking that pathway will be the most exciting adventure of your life.

My new book The Tao of Spiritual Partnership is now also available in print and Kindle formats.

From the Description on Amazon: More exciting than any other kind of relationship you have ever known, spiritual partnership is a path, a Tao, available to you so that you may transform your life. Spiritual partnership becomes background music to daily life allowing you to enhance the process of your growth and evolution.

This ground-breaking book addresses:

• relationship patterns that hold you back from a truly fulfilled life
• the strong connection between sexuality and spiritual partnership
• communication leading to true connection & lasting transformation of your relationship

It is precisely at the problematic crossroads so often encountered in relationships that we are offered the opportunity to create a new foundation based on mutual complementarity rather than need; a free relationship between two people who want to be together, rather than two people who need to be together. Needing another, we are told, is the measure of love, but for a fully conscious individual nothing could be further from the truth. And therein lies part of the secret and healing power of spiritual partnerships.

Praise for The Tao of Spiritual Partnership

“All humans seek the illusive touch of another's Soul, which opens us to the sense of belonging to something bigger than the self. Dr. Kortsch has given us the true "tao" of relationship in this brilliant exploration of emotional tapestry. We will be grateful for this illumination of spiritual partnership for generations to come."
Chris Griscom: Spiritual Leader, Author

“Eloquently and comprehensive, showing how your primary love relationship may be a sacred vessel that transports you and your partner to a place of mutual healing and expansion.”
Robert Schwartz: Author of Your Soul’s Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born

"The Tao of Spiritual Partnership is a unique blend of wit and wisdom; Dr. Kortsch encourages us to take responsibility for our relationships, while recognizing and seizing the opportunities for our own personal spiritual growth."
William Buhlman, Author of Adventures Beyond the Body

Emerge Like the Lotus

Today - as so many other blog posts, articles, and news stories attest - is that day we have thought of for decades, December 21, 2012. In less than one hour the solstice will be exact.

I'd like to add only one thought to this rising tide of the many: use this day in your own quiet way, in your little world, within your particular parameters, to emerge from the clamor like a lotus emerges from the mud, and to allow yourself to be seen in all your beauty, as a lotus in all its glory can be seen on top of the muddy water where it exists in splendor.

You can do this by allowing your own light to shine, by knowing that the more your own light shines, the more other lights will be able to shine, will learn how to shine, will want to shine - and by all of us shining our own light, we will collectively change this world of ours.

It was the Buddha who wrote: As a lotus flower is born in water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome the world, live unsoiled by the world.

For much more about allowing your own light to shine by becoming more conscious, as well as about connecting with your inner self in order to transform your life, have a look at my book Rewiring the Soul: Finding the Possible Self (paperback or Kindle).

Have You Chosen Your Attitude?

Having the inner wherewithal to choose your attitude at all times is a recipe for well-being. If you know that no matter what the circumstances, you will be capable of choosing an attitude that maintains your own inner well-being or balance, you know that nothing - but absolutely nothing - that comes your way will have the ability to throw you.

But most people can't do this. The main reason is because very few people in our culture tell us about this way of living when we are growing up. And then, of course, once we have grown up, we are convinced that it is otherwise. In other words, that our attitude is determined by our circumstances. If things are gong well, we are happy. If they are not, we are most definitely not happy. And that's it.

But there are those others, over the millennia, that have propagated another kind of thinking. Not everyone is aware of them, not everyone has paid attention to them, but they are out there and have been out there for those whose eyes are open since the beginning of time. Here is their message: being conscious and aware of yourself at all times, as well as accepting responsibility for yourself and your inner state at all times, allows you to choose your attitude in the face of any kind of situation at all.

You'll need to have a brief dialogue with yourself if you wish this to take root in your life. The brief dialogue needs to be held when a situation falls into your life that would normally render you unhappy, fearful, stressed, frustrated, angry, or impatient, judgmental, critical or self-aggrandizing. Add to that list any other descriptive that you care that lies on the negative side of the emotional continuum we are all subject to, and then realize that whether or not you go in that direction - will from now on depend entirely on you and not on your circumstances - if you practice being so. The dialogue might go like this:
  • such-and-such has happened
  • this normally makes me feel unhappy or have this __________________ attitude
  • but I have a choice about how I feel
  • do I wish to feel unhappy or have this ________________________ attitude about it?
  • no I don't
  • so if I have a choice, what might be a better attitude or feeling to have?
  • I could choose to remain calm
  • I could choose to find a place of inner balance before I decide what to do
  • I could choose to look at this as a learning experience
There are many variations on this theme, but they all come down to one common denominator: it is up to you. It is your choice. And that is how simple it is. Obviously it requires practice - but then so do most things that are worthwhile attaining.

It was Victor Frankl who said: the last of the human freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances. And he said this after having survived Auschwitz ...

Judging Others ... Judging Yourself

Have you ever noticed how many people are inconsiderate? How often others just don't seem to be aware of anyone but themselves?

How about the people that think they are worth more than others because their bank account is bigger? Or those that think their opinion is better than others' because they are well-known celebrities, politicians, public figures, or hold a post of some weight?

And have you seen any of those that believe there is something special about them because they frequent a lot of social events, or because they eat at certain exclusive restaurants, or stay at up-market hotels?

What about the person who drinks too much and creates havoc on public roads? Or causes uncomfortable situations in a family's holiday reunion? The list could go on and on.

Judging other people for any of the above and many other things, is a curious phenomenon. As we judge others we are actually judging ourselves. What I mean by that is that if we feel we must judge, we automatically place ourselves in a position of "better" in some way than the other person. Examine that for a moment. Better? Better?

It may be true that others do whatever they do, but where do we come, what place in ourselves do we come from with these judgments?

Much negativity is associated with judging others, beginning with that essence of feeling somehow better or more worthy, or holier, or less materialistic, or more law-abiding, or less vain, etc. than another. So in this comparison of ourselves and the other, we lose any possibility of connection with the other. If we lose that, we lose the most precious aspect of our time here: that of discovering our connection to all of humanity.

Going back to judgment - here is a suggestion: when you find yourself judging, and if you would like to do so less, or stop it all together, simply send the other person peace or love in your mind, and let it go. Let whatever it was that you had been judging leave your mind. You will find that your life becomes both much more simple, and much, much richer. Try it, even if only for a couple of weeks to observe its effect on you.

For much more about learning to love the self by not judging the self, but by becoming more conscious, as well as about connecting with your inner self in order to transform your life, have a look at my book Rewiring the Soul: Finding the Possible Self (paperback or Kindle).

Burdens on the Mind

As you go through a long day of errands and shopping, you find yourself weighed down at the end with many different parcels. You may despair of ever ending your duties and getting rid of the numerous bags and packages, and you notice how your arms ache from carrying them around. You also notice that the lovely ice cream that was tempting you, was simply not possible to have because your hands were so occupied in carrying what you already had in them. So you did not have the ice cream and you also didn't stop to smell the glorious jasmine because it would have been impossible to stoop down with all that weight in your hands. Finally, you wanted to run your hand over the rich velvet of a sofa in a display, but again, could not, because of all that you already had in your hands. It would have simply been too much trouble to let it all go, allow yourself the pleasure of feeling the velvet, and then picking it all up again in order to get all those parcels to the car.

However, on some occasions you may find that you are able to stop at your car halfway through the day in order to deposit some of the packages in the trunk and so your arms can relax again and you feel less tired.

In our lives we are weighed down with another kind of burden that can weigh even more heavily on our minds than those packages weigh on our arms, especially if we are not able to let go of those burdens and therefore we continue to allow them to occupy a place inside of us. Those are the burdens of pain, anger, suffering, and resentment about wrongs that others have done to us and that we refuse to release, or we choose not to release, or on occasion, we may not even be aware of the fact that we could release them. And so of course more and more of these burdens accumulate inside of us, leaving very little room for joy and delight and love and happiness. It was the Buddha who said: Remembering a wrong is like carrying a burden on the mind.

Have you chosen to let go of the wrongs of your life? Remember that the less you love yourself, the more you will cling to the pain and resentment, and the more you love yourself, the more you will be able to do this - in fact - the more you will want to do this.

For more about being aware of what is going on inside of you and how that may be holding you back, and of making conscious choices that will enhance your life and promote greater inner peace and freedom, have a look at my book Rewiring the Soul: Finding the Possible Self (paperback or Kindle).

Hidden Layers of the Self In Your Dreams

In the early days of this blog, I did a number of posts on dreams in order to offer readers multiple ways of viewing hidden layers of the self by using the symbolism of dreams. The reason hidden layers of the self are so important is because they connect us to our true essence and dreams are one of the many tools available to us to find that all-important and fundamental connection. Moreover, without that connection, we can never truly aspire to know ourselves, nor to fulfill ourselves and our lives to the full extent that is possible.

Those posts in this series on dream symbols are:
Be sufficiently interested in yourself to examine some of these areas, and begin to keep a dream journal. You may be amazed at the hidden depths and treasures you discover about yourself.

How Much are You Influenced by What Others Think?

That's a loaded question because most of us don't care to admit that our actions and beliefs and thought patterns are frequently swayed by what others think. Fashion is a great example. Many of my friends (and myself included too at times ... don't conclude that I think that I'm so perfect!) who of course - like myself - are no longer in the spring chicken stage of their lives, will make remarks about elements of current fashion on young girls. I would never have worn something like that, they will say. In my time we were more decent. I look them sternly in the eye and go: so did you change from pointed high heels to round-toed chunky heeled shoes in the early 70's? Or did you go from the knee-high dresses to minis to midis all through the 70's and 80's? What about shoulder pads? They glare at me and tell me that that was very different. After all, they say, I didn't bare my mid-riff, or show off the top of my "behind" in my jeans. And I continue in my lecture mode: what about those strappy FM stiletto heels that came back in the late 70's? Did you ever buy any of those???

The point here is not the morality or esthetics of the article of clothing, as much as the fact that we almost all go along with fashion trends. How many women were there - when I was a kid - who were grandmothers and who did not have white or grey hair? Very few, unless they were genetically lucky. Practically none of them dyed their hair, or if they did, and this was more common in the US than here in Europe, you had "blue-silvery" hair. Now, very few whose hair has gone grey or white at the roots will allow those roots to be seen. Why? Because of what others will think, or because of how we will be perceived by others, which amounts to the same thing.

When three-button jackets for men came out, when ties become more narrow, or wider again, when shirt collars change, what percentage of males does not go along with the trend? When overcoats travel above the knee, or when designers decide to make them sink below it again, how many resist the pull of what is being worn out there by most?

Botox, plastic surgery, hair styles, car models, type and color scheme of furnishings in a home, for crying out loud! And I haven't even started on politically correct opinions or ways of voicing things.

Again, my point is that we are so swayed by our environment, whether it's the very close one, such as family and friends, slightly more distanced one, such as work colleagues and neighbours, or simply mass media and above all, mass advertising. Why are there so many individuals - including more and more males - with eating disorders, or at least with poor body image and subsequent psychological stress due to finding their bodies "wrong" in some way, because of an impossible ideal shown to us day after day out there on TV and in movies and magazines? It's very clear ... we are swayed and we need to become more conscious of it.

Look at how easily we are convinced to eat or drink (or decades ago - to smoke) this or that, just because we are swayed by the advertising. How many times have we now heard how much was already known back then - about smoking, for example - with regards to how noxious it is for our health, and since then, we've heard similar horror stories about additives in food, sweeteners, MSG, corn starch, etc. And yet we continue to be swayed.

In my early 30's I very deliberately stopped buying fashion magazines because I saw the effect they had on me. I won't watch commercials if I happen to be on a television station that still is allowed to have them in the middle of a presentation. No matter how much I like a product, if I remember to read the ingredients on it, and if they are not healthy, or if there are several of them that make no sense or are only numbers or chemical words, I won't buy the product. And so on. But this has to be a conscious choice.

And only you can make it...

If you are willing to assume total responsibility for the self and to start what is an on-going journey, you will quickly begin to glimpse the first fruits of the ultimate goal: inner well-being, freedom, peace, harmony and joy.

Emotions Can Pave Your Road To Freedom!

Emotions are so important in deciding what you will do with the circumstances of your life. It's a topic I discuss with so many of my clients. I also discuss it in my monthly newsletter that goes out across the globe, and find there is so much resonance in this, and so decided that this clip from my local radio show that broadcast weekly for five years here on the southern coast of Spain, should go up again. It's got a great message. It's not original to me, many authors and speakers say the same, but it is so important to internalize. Please listen to it:

Remember To Be Kind

Such a simple thing to be kind, so why aren't we always kind? Think of the number of times you've found it necessary to impress upon someone that you are right, or know better (or are better), as opposed to being kind. Ugh. Makes you shudder with yourself, right? It certainly makes me shudder with myself.

I hold these two quotes close in order to remind myself frequently:

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.
Dalai Lama

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.
Seneca

Let us all make a practice of always being kind. And let's start right now!
